Macbook Not Charging

Perhaps the most obvious reason for a Macbook not charging would be because of a defective battery. While this is a distinct possibility, there are a number of different reasons which should be explored before coming to this conclusion. To rule out the real reason for the Macbook not charging please read through some of the possible causes below.

Basic Checks

Before looking for more complex causes to the Macbook not charging issue we must first go through some basic checks in order to eliminate the most obvious of causes.

  • Check the socket for the power adapter for signs of damage to the wire, if the contact looks dirty then unplug from the wall and clean using electrical contact cleaner
  • Remove the battery and plug in to the power adapter and try and turn your Macbook on. If your Macbook still fails to turn on then there could be an issue with the power supply. Try repeating this with a new power supply. If the problem remains it is possible there could be a problem with the motherboard; at this point you should seek professional advice
  • The SMC or ‘System Management Controller’ is used to balance the power, workload and noise of the machine and can sometimes cause problems with the battery and power. To understand how to do this read the Apple documentation here.

Is your Macbook not charging to 100%?

Short charges to any battery can significantly reduce its lifetime which Apple is acutely aware of. A common reason for the Macbook not charging is that Apple employs an intelligent battery preservation system, designed to avoid short discharge and charge cycles. You can see this evidenced when attempting to recharge the battery before it has dropped below 93% charge.

Overcoming the battery preservation system

In this instance to achieve a full charge of 100% you will need to use your Macbook until the charge has fallen below the 93 threshold. Plugging this in to charge, you should now be able to attain a 100% battery charge.

It’s worth saying at this point, that while this will help you achieve that 100% charge it is always best to allow the battery to drain completely before charging back to full. This may not always be convenient but will significantly improve the longevity of the battery.

Reasons for Macbook not charging

  • Loose cabling between the battery charging port of the computer to the logic board.  You can look for this by removing the keyboard to have a look inside; however the Macbook’s keyboard can be delicate and can crack easily upon removal. This is something you might want to leave for the experts at a Mac Repair Centre.
  • Non Apple branded batteries are sometimes the cause of Macbook’s not charging. Nonstandard batteries are not built to the same specification that Apple work to and can sometimes cause problems with not charging or holding charge. When purchasing a refurbished or second hand battery from Ebay it is worth checking whether the battery is a genuine Apple battery. If it isn’t you should give some consideration to replacing with the genuine article. This can sometimes be problematic once Apple realise the case has been opened by a non-authorised third party.

Hopefully that has helped to solve the problem, however if you have found another problem or solution to your Macbook not charging then please get in touch and I will update the advice on this page.
